Suzuki moto maintained its focus on the 750 class with the fourth-generation bike and allocated its resources toward both Superbike racing and the fast-growing 600 cc middleweight class. As a result, it was expected that the Gsxr 1100 could remain in its former configuration - second-generation liquidcooled engine in an over-the-top alloy frame - and still remain competitive.
